———
a Gk. ἑβδομάς, a period of seven, generally of seven days (i.e., a week) when not explicitly qualified, but not necessarily. If a seven-year period (i.e., a week of years), then seventy periods = 490 years (assuming 360-day years, then 490*360/365.24 = 483 solar years). (See Lv. 25:8 for an explicitly qualified period of seven years: ἑπτὰ ἑβδομάδες ἐτῶν, seven periods of seven years, i.e., forty-nine years.) While here unspecified whether of days or years, this is in contrast to Dn. 10:2 which makes an explicit qualification where days are intended: τρεῖς ἑβοδμάδας ἡμερῶν, three periods of seven days, i.e., three weeks. (Though, note, this qualification is not made in Dn. 10:2 OG.)

Dn 9:24
Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.

a See Neh. 2:1-8: (1) In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes [I of Persia a.k.a. Artaxerxes Longimanus, 465/64-424/23 B.C.E.]... (3) I said to the king, ...the city, the place of my fathers' graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire... (4) Then the king said to me, What are you requesting?... (5) And I said to the king, ...that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' graves, that I may rebuild it... (ESV).
b If years, then forty-nine years, the amount of time specified in Lv. 25:8 preceding a Jubilee.
c Totaling sixty-nine periods (483 years, if years; assuming 360-day years, then 483*360/365.24 = 476 solar years), leaving one period of seven remaining.

a If "the anointed one" is Jesus of Nazareth and assuming a crucifixion date in 33 C.E., backdating 476 years would be 444 B.C.E. as the year of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. (There is no year zero, so backdating 32 years is 1 C.E. and backdating 33 years is 1 B.C.E.; 1 B.C.E. + 476 - 33 = 444 B.C.E.) 444 B.C.E. falls squarely within the reign of Artaxerxes I, although neither the crucifixion of Jesus [from which we subtract 69 periods of seven 360-day years] nor the beginning of the reign of King Artaxerxes [to which we add 20 years] can be dated with absolute certainty. (Encyclopaedia Iranica: The exact month-dates of all these events [the murder of Xerxes and accession of Artaxerxes] are not given. Artaxerxes' accession year is generally thought to be the year 284 of the Babylonian Nobonassar era (beginning in December, 465 B.C.). ...The generally accepted date of his death in 425-24 seems based on the Babylonian Nabonassar era; but the sources show some confusion about the length of his reign: Ctesias, for instance, gives 42 years, Diodorus 40. The chronology is complicated by the brief and officially unrecognized reigns of Artapanus [the murderer of Xerxes] before, and of Xerxes II and Sogdianus after his own.)
