¶Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.

¶Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.
2Is 36:22καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Ραψακην ἐκ Λαχις εἰς Ιερουσαλημ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Εζεκιαν μετὰ δυνάμεως πολλῆς καὶ ἔστη ἐν τῷ ὑδραγωγῷ τῆς κολυμβήθρας τῆς ἄνω ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ ἀγροῦ τοῦ γναφέωςIs 36:2
The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.

Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust?

Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust?
5Is 36:55μὴ ἐν βουλῇ ἢ λόγοις χειλέων παράταξις γίνεται καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ τίνι πέποιθας ὅτι ἀπειθεῖς μοιIs 36:5
I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

6Is 36:66ἰδοὺ πεποιθὼς εἶ ἐπὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν καλαμίνην τὴν τεθλασμένην ταύτην ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον ὃς ἂν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἐπιστηρισθῇ εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ οὕτως ἐστὶν Φαραω βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου καὶ πάντες οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπ’ αὐτῷIs 36:6
Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

But if you tell me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar?’”
8Is 36:88νῦν μείχθητε τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυρίων καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν δισχιλίαν ἵππον εἰ δυνήσεσθε δοῦναι ἀναβάτας ἐπ’ αὐτούςIs 36:8
Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
Is 36:8Is 36:8וְעַתָּה֙ הִתְעָ֣רֶב נָ֔א אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֑וּר וְאֶתְּנָ֤ה לְךָ֙ אַלְפַּ֣יִם סוּסִ֔ים אִם־תּוּכַ֕ל לָ֥תֶת לְךָ֖ רֹכְבִ֥ים עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃Is 36:8

9Is 36:99καὶ πῶς δύνασθε ἀποστρέψαι εἰς πρόσωπον τοπάρχου ἑνός οἰκέται εἰσὶν οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπ’ Αἰγυπτίοις εἰς ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτηνIs 36:9
How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
Is 36:10Is 36:10וְעַתָּה֙ הֲמִבַּלְעֲדֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה עָלִ֛יתִי עַל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֑הּ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔י עֲלֵ֛ה אֶל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את וְהַשְׁחִיתָֽהּ׃Is 36:10
Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
11Is 36:1111καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ελιακιμ καὶ Σομνας καὶ Ιωαχ λάλησον πρὸς τοὺς παῖδάς σου Συριστί ἀκούομεν γὰρ ἡμεῖς καὶ μὴ λάλει πρὸς ἡμᾶς Ιουδαϊστί καὶ ἵνα τί λαλεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῶν ἐπὶ τῷ τείχειIs 36:11
¶Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
Is 36:11Is 36:11וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶלְיָקִים֩ וְשֶׁבְנָ֨א וְיוֹאָ֜ח אֶל־רַב־שָׁקֵ֗ה דַּבֶּר־נָ֤א אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲרָמִ֔ית כִּ֥י שֹׁמְעִ֖ים אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וְאַל־תְּדַבֵּ֤ר אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ יְהוּדִ֔ית בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־הַחוֹמָֽה׃Is 36:11
¶Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
12Is 36:1212καὶ εἶπεν Ραψακης πρὸς αὐτούς μὴ πρὸς τὸν κύριον ὑμῶν ἢ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπέσταλκέν με ὁ κύριός μου λαλῆσαι τοὺς λόγους τούτους οὐχὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει ἵνα φάγωσιν κόπρον καὶ πίωσιν οὖρον μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἅμαIs 36:12
¶But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

Is 36:12
¶But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13Is 36:1313καὶ ἔστη Ραψακης καὶ ἐβόησεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ιουδαϊστὶ καὶ εἶπεν ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ μεγάλου βασιλέως ἈσσυρίωνIs 36:13
Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Is 36:13Is 36:13וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ רַב־שָׁקֵ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֥א בְקוֹל־גָּד֖וֹל יְהוּדִ֑ית וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שִׁמְע֗וּ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֛י הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ הַגָּד֖וֹל מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃Is 36:13
Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14Is 36:1414τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεύς μὴ ἀπατάτω ὑμᾶς Εζεκιας λόγοις οἳ οὐ δυνήσονται ῥύσασθαι ὑμᾶςIs 36:14
Thus says the king, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
Is 36:14Is 36:14כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אַל־יַשִּׁ֥א לָכֶ֖ם חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ כִּ֥י לֹֽא־יוּכַ֖ל לְהַצִּ֥יל אֶתְכֶֽם׃Is 36:14
Thus says the king, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15Is 36:1515καὶ μὴ λεγέτω ὑμῖν Εζεκιας ὅτι ῥύσεται ὑμᾶς ὁ θεός καὶ οὐ μὴ παραδοθῇ ἡ πόλις αὕτη ἐν χειρὶ βασιλέως ἈσσυρίωνIs 36:15
Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
Is 36:15Is 36:15וְאַל־יַבְטַ֨ח אֶתְכֶ֤ם חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֔ר הַצֵּ֥ל יַצִּילֵ֖נוּ יְהוָ֑ה לֹ֤א תִנָּתֵן֙ הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את בְּיַ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃Is 36:15
Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
16Is 36:1616μὴ ἀκούετε Εζεκιου τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων εἰ βούλεσθε εὐλογηθῆναι ἐκπορεύεσθε πρός με καὶ φάγεσθε ἕκαστος τὴν ἄμπελον αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς συκᾶς καὶ πίεσθε ὕδωρ τοῦ λάκκου ὑμῶνIs 36:16
Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
Is 36:16Is 36:16אַֽל־תִּשְׁמְע֖וּ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ ס כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה אָמַ֜ר הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֗וּר עֲשֽׂוּ־אִתִּ֤י בְרָכָה֙ וּצְא֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וְאִכְל֤וּ אִישׁ־גַּפְנוֹ֙ וְאִ֣ישׁ תְּאֵנָת֔וֹ וּשְׁת֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ מֵי־בוֹרֽוֹ׃Is 36:16
Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17Is 36:1717ἕως ἂν ἔλθω καὶ λάβω ὑμᾶς εἰς γῆν ὡς ἡ γῆ ὑμῶν γῆ σίτου καὶ οἴνου καὶ ἄρτων καὶ ἀμπελώνωνIs 36:17
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “Yahweh will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
Is 36:18Is 36:18פֶּן־יַסִּ֨ית אֶתְכֶ֤ם חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהוָ֖ה יַצִּילֵ֑נוּ הַהִצִּ֜ילוּ אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַגּוֹיִם֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אַרְצ֔וֹ מִיַּ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃Is 36:18
Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “Yahweh will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Is 36:1919ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς Αιμαθ καὶ Αρφαθ καὶ ποῦ ὁ θεὸς τῆς πόλεως Σεπφαριμ μὴ ἐδύναντο ῥύσασθαι Σαμάρειαν ἐκ χειρός μουIs 36:19
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
Is 36:19Is 36:19אַיֵּ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י חֲמָת֙ וְאַרְפָּ֔ד אַיֵּ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י סְפַרְוָ֑יִם וְכִֽי־הִצִּ֥ילוּ אֶת־שֹׁמְר֖וֹן מִיָּדִֽי׃Is 36:19
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20Is 36:2020τίς τῶν θεῶν πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων ἐρρύσατο τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς χειρός μου ὅτι ῥύσεται ὁ θεὸς Ιερουσαλημ ἐκ χειρός μουIs 36:20
Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”

21Is 36:2121καὶ ἐσιώπησαν καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ λόγον διὰ τὸ προστάξαι τὸν βασιλέα μηδένα ἀποκριθῆναιIs 36:21
¶But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”

¶Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
