Blessed is the man who has not slipped with his mouth, and doesn’t suffer from sorrow for sins.

2Sir 14:22μακάριος οὗ οὐ κατέγνω ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὃς οὐκ ἔπεσεν ἀπὸ τῆς ἐλπίδος αὐτοῦSir 14:2
Blessed is he whose soul does not condemn him, and who has not given up hope.

3Sir 14:33ἀνδρὶ μικρολόγῳ οὐ καλὸς ὁ πλοῦτος καὶ ἀνθρώπῳ βασκάνῳ ἵνα τί χρήματαSir 14:3
Riches are not appropriate for a stingy person. What would a miser do with money?

4Sir 14:44ὁ συνάγων ἀπὸ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ συνάγει ἄλλοις καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς αὐτοῦ τρυφήσουσιν ἕτεροιSir 14:4
He who gathers by denying himself gathers for others. Others will revel in his goods.

5Sir 14:55ὁ πονηρὸς ἑαυτῷ τίνι ἀγαθὸς ἔσται καὶ οὐ μὴ εὐφρανθήσεται ἐν τοῖς χρήμασιν αὐτοῦSir 14:5
If one is mean to himself, to whom will he be good? He won’t enjoy his possessions.

6Sir 14:66τοῦ βασκαίνοντος ἑαυτὸν οὐκ ἔστιν πονηρότερος καὶ τοῦτο ἀνταπόδομα τῆς κακίας αὐτοῦSir 14:6
There is none more evil than he who is grudging to himself. This is a punishment for his wickedness.

7Sir 14:77κἂν εὖ ποιῇ ἐν λήθῃ ποιεῖ καὶ ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων ἐκφαίνει τὴν κακίαν αὐτοῦSir 14:7
Even if he does good, he does it in forgetfulness. In the end, he reveals his wickedness.

8Sir 14:88πονηρὸς ὁ βασκαίνων ὀφθαλμῷ ἀποστρέφων πρόσωπον καὶ ὑπερορῶν ψυχάςSir 14:8
A miser is evil. He turns away and disregards souls.

9Sir 14:99πλεονέκτου ὀφθαλμὸς οὐκ ἐμπίπλαται μερίδι καὶ ἀδικία πονηρὰ ἀναξηραίνει ψυχήνSir 14:9
A covetous man’s eye is not satisfied with his portion. Wicked injustice dries up his soul.

10Sir 14:1010ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρὸς φθονερὸς ἐπ’ ἄρτῳ καὶ ἐλλιπὴς ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης αὐτοῦSir 14:10
A miser begrudges bread, and it is lacking at his table.

11Sir 14:1111τέκνον καθὼς ἐὰν ἔχῃς εὖ ποίει σεαυτὸν καὶ προσφορὰς κυρίῳ ἀξίως πρόσαγεSir 14:11
My son, according to what you have, treat yourself well, and bring worthy offerings to the Lord.

12Sir 14:1212μνήσθητι ὅτι θάνατος οὐ χρονιεῖ καὶ διαθήκη ᾅδου οὐχ ὑπεδείχθη σοιSir 14:12
Remember that death will not wait, and that the covenant of Hades hasn’t been shown to you.

13Sir 14:1313πρίν σε τελευτῆσαι εὖ ποίει φίλῳ καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἰσχύν σου ἔκτεινον καὶ δὸς αὐτῷSir 14:13
Do good to your friends before you die. According to your ability, reach out and give to them.

14Sir 14:1414μὴ ἀφυστερήσῃς ἀπὸ ἀγαθῆς ἡμέρας καὶ μερὶς ἐπιθυμίας ἀγαθῆς μή σε παρελθάτωSir 14:14
Don’t deprive yourself of a good day. Don’t let your share of a desired good pass you by.

15Sir 14:1515οὐχὶ ἑτέρῳ καταλείψεις τοὺς πόνους σου καὶ τοὺς κόπους σου εἰς διαίρεσιν κλήρουSir 14:15
Won’t you leave your labors to another, and your toils be divided by lot?

16Sir 14:1616δὸς καὶ λαβὲ καὶ ἀπάτησον τὴν ψυχήν σου ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ᾅδου ζητῆσαι τρυφήνSir 14:16
Give, take, and treat yourself well, because there is no seeking of luxury in Hades.

17Sir 14:1717πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς ἱμάτιον παλαιοῦται ἡ γὰρ διαθήκη ἀπ’ αἰῶνος θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇSir 14:17
All flesh grows old like a garment, for the covenant from the beginning is, “You must die!”

18Sir 14:1818ὡς φύλλον θάλλον ἐπὶ δένδρου δασέος τὰ μὲν καταβάλλει ἄλλα δὲ φύει οὕτως γενεὰ σαρκὸς καὶ αἵματος ἡ μὲν τελευτᾷ ἑτέρα δὲ γεννᾶταιSir 14:18
Like the leaves flourishing on a thick tree, some it sheds, and some grow, so also are the generations of flesh and blood: one comes to an end and another is born.

19Sir 14:1919πᾶν ἔργον σηπόμενον ἐκλείπει καὶ ὁ ἐργαζόμενος αὐτὸ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἀπελεύσεταιSir 14:19
Every work rots and falls away, and its builder will depart with it.

20Sir 14:2020μακάριος ἀνήρ ὃς ἐν σοφίᾳ μελετήσει καὶ ὃς ἐν συνέσει αὐτοῦ διαλεχθήσεταιSir 14:20
Blessed is the man who meditates on wisdom, and who reasons by his understanding.

21Sir 14:2121ὁ διανοούμενος τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀποκρύφοις αὐτῆς ἐννοηθήσεταιSir 14:21
He who considers her ways in his heart will also have knowledge of her secrets.

22Sir 14:2222ἔξελθε ὀπίσω αὐτῆς ὡς ἰχνευτὴς καὶ ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῆς ἐνέδρευεSir 14:22
Go after her like a hunter, and lie in wait in her paths.

23Sir 14:2323ὁ παρακύπτων διὰ τῶν θυρίδων αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν θυρωμάτων αὐτῆς ἀκροάσεταιSir 14:23
He who peers in at her windows will also listen at her doors.

24Sir 14:2424ὁ καταλύων σύνεγγυς τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῆς καὶ πήξει πάσσαλον ἐν τοῖς τοίχοις αὐτῆςSir 14:24
He who lodges close to her house will also fasten a nail in her walls.

25Sir 14:2525στήσει τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ κατὰ χεῖρας αὐτῆς καὶ καταλύσει ἐν καταλύματι ἀγαθῶνSir 14:25
He will pitch his tent near at hand to her, and will lodge in a lodging where good things are.

26Sir 14:2626θήσει τὰ τέκνα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ σκέπῃ αὐτῆς καὶ ὑπὸ τοὺς κλάδους αὐτῆς αὐλισθήσεταιSir 14:26
He will set his children under her shelter, and will rest under her branches.

27Sir 14:2727σκεπασθήσεται ὑπ’ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ καύματος καὶ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτῆς καταλύσειSir 14:27
By her he will be covered from heat, and will lodge in her glory.
