Don’t desire a multitude of unprofitable children, neither delight in ungodly sons.

2Sir 16:22ἐὰν πληθύνωσιν μὴ εὐφραίνου ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς εἰ μή ἐστιν φόβος κυρίου μετ’ αὐτῶνSir 16:2
If they multiply, don’t delight in them unless the fear of the Lord is in them.

3Sir 16:33μὴ ἐμπιστεύσῃς τῇ ζωῇ αὐτῶν καὶ μὴ ἔπεχε ἐπὶ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν κρείσσων γὰρ εἷς ἢ χίλιοι καὶ ἀποθανεῖν ἄτεκνον ἢ ἔχειν τέκνα ἀσεβῆSir 16:3
Don’t trust in their life. Don’t rely on their numbers; for one can be better than a thousand, and to die childless than to have ungodly children.

4Sir 16:44ἀπὸ γὰρ ἑνὸς συνετοῦ συνοικισθήσεται πόλις φυλὴ δὲ ἀνόμων ἐρημωθήσεταιSir 16:4
For from one who has understanding, a city will be populated, but a race of wicked men will be made desolate.

5Sir 16:55πολλὰ τοιαῦτα ἑόρακεν ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου καὶ ἰσχυρότερα τούτων ἀκήκοεν τὸ οὖς μουSir 16:5
I have seen many such things with my eyes. My ear has heard mightier things than these.

6Sir 16:66ἐν συναγωγῇ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐκκαυθήσεται πῦρ καὶ ἐν ἔθνει ἀπειθεῖ ἐξεκαύθη ὀργήSir 16:6
In a congregation of sinners, a fire will be kindled. In a disobedient nation, wrath is kindled.

7Sir 16:77οὐκ ἐξιλάσατο περὶ τῶν ἀρχαίων γιγάντων οἳ ἀπέστησαν τῇ ἰσχύι αὐτῶνSir 16:7
He was not pacified toward the giants of old time, who revolted in their strength.

8Sir 16:88οὐκ ἐφείσατο περὶ τῆς παροικίας Λωτ οὓς ἐβδελύξατο διὰ τὴν ὑπερηφανίαν αὐτῶνSir 16:8
He didn’t spare Lot’s neighbors, whom he abhorred for their pride.

9Sir 16:99οὐκ ἠλέησεν ἔθνος ἀπωλείας τοὺς ἐξηρμένους ἐν ἁμαρτίαις αὐτῶνSir 16:9
He didn’t pity the people of perdition who were taken away in their sins,

10Sir 16:1010καὶ οὕτως ἑξακοσίας χιλιάδας πεζῶν τοὺς ἐπισυναχθέντας ἐν σκληροκαρδίᾳ αὐτῶνSir 16:10
or in like manner, the six hundred thousand footmen who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts.

11Sir 16:1111κἂν ᾖ εἷς σκληροτράχηλος θαυμαστὸν τοῦτο εἰ ἀθῳωθήσεται ἔλεος γὰρ καὶ ὀργὴ παρ’ αὐτῷ δυνάστης ἐξιλασμῶν καὶ ἐκχέων ὀργήνSir 16:11
Even if there is one stiff-necked person, it is a marvel if he will be unpunished; for mercy and wrath are both with him who is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath.

As his mercy is great, so is his correction also. He judges a man according to his works.

13Sir 16:1313οὐκ ἐκφεύξεται ἐν ἁρπάγματι ἁμαρτωλός καὶ οὐ μὴ καθυστερήσει ὑπομονὴ εὐσεβοῦςSir 16:13
The sinner will not escape with plunder. The perseverance of the godly will not be frustrated.

He will make room for every work of mercy. Each man will receive according to his works.

17Sir 16:1717μὴ εἴπῃς ὅτι ἀπὸ κυρίου κρυβήσομαι καὶ ἐξ ὕψους τίς μου μνησθήσεται ἐν λαῷ πλείονι οὐ μὴ γνωσθῶ τίς γὰρ ἡ ψυχή μου ἐν ἀμετρήτῳ κτίσειSir 16:17
Don’t say, “I will be hidden from the Lord,” and “Who will remember me from on high?” I will not be known among so many people, for what is my soul in a boundless creation?

18Sir 16:1818ἰδοὺ ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ὁ οὐρανὸς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἄβυσσος καὶ γῆ ἐν τῇ ἐπισκοπῇ αὐτοῦ σαλευθήσονταιSir 16:18
Behold, the heaven, the heaven of heavens, the deep, and the earth, will be moved when he visits.

19Sir 16:1919ἅμα τὰ ὄρη καὶ τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς ἐν τῷ ἐπιβλέψαι εἰς αὐτὰ τρόμῳ συσσείονταιSir 16:19
The mountains and the foundations of the earth together are shaken with trembling when he looks at them.

No heart will think about these things. Who could comprehend his ways?

Like a tempest which no man can see, so, the majority of his works are* hidden.

22Sir 16:2222ἔργα δικαιοσύνης τίς ἀναγγελεῖ ἢ τίς ὑπομενεῖ μακρὰν γὰρ ἡ διαθήκηSir 16:22
Who will declare his works of righteousness? Who will wait for them? For his covenant is afar off.*

23Sir 16:2323ἐλαττούμενος καρδίᾳ διανοεῖται ταῦτα καὶ ἀνὴρ ἄφρων καὶ πλανώμενος διανοεῖται μωράSir 16:23
He who is lacking in* understanding thinks about these things. An unwise and erring man thinks foolishly.

24Sir 16:2424ἄκουσόν μου τέκνον καὶ μάθε ἐπιστήμην καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν λόγων μου πρόσεχε τῇ καρδίᾳ σουSir 16:24
My son, listen to me, learn knowledge, and heed my words with your heart.

25Sir 16:2525ἐκφανῶ ἐν σταθμῷ παιδείαν καὶ ἐν ἀκριβείᾳ ἀπαγγελῶ ἐπιστήμηνSir 16:25
I will impart instruction with precision, and declare knowledge exactly.

26Sir 16:2626ἐν κρίσει κυρίου τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς καὶ ἀπὸ ποιήσεως αὐτῶν διέστειλεν μερίδας αὐτῶνSir 16:26
In the judgment of the Lord are his works from the beginning. From the making of them he determined their boundaries.

27Sir 16:2727ἐκόσμησεν εἰς αἰῶνα τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς αὐτῶν εἰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν οὔτε ἐπείνασαν οὔτε ἐκοπίασαν καὶ οὐκ ἐξέλιπον ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῶνSir 16:27
He arranged his works for all time, and their beginnings to their generations. They aren’t hungry or weary, and they don’t cease from their works.

28Sir 16:2828ἕκαστος τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐξέθλιψεν καὶ ἕως αἰῶνος οὐκ ἀπειθήσουσιν τοῦ ῥήματος αὐτοῦSir 16:28
No one pushes aside his neighbor. They will never disobey his word.

29Sir 16:2929καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα κύριος εἰς τὴν γῆν ἐπέβλεψεν καὶ ἐνέπλησεν αὐτὴν τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦSir 16:29
After this also the Lord looked at the earth and filled it with his blessings.

All manner of living things covered its surface, and they return into it.
