My son, if you come to serve the Lord, prepare your soul for temptation.
2Sir 2:22εὔθυνον τὴν καρδίαν σου καὶ καρτέρησον καὶ μὴ σπεύσῃς ἐν καιρῷ ἐπαγωγῆςSir 2:2
Set your heart aright, constantly endure, and don’t make haste in time of calamity.
3Sir 2:33κολλήθητι αὐτῷ καὶ μὴ ἀποστῇς ἵνα αὐξηθῇς ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων σουSir 2:3
Cling to him, and don’t depart, that you may be increased at your latter end.
4Sir 2:44πᾶν ὃ ἐὰν ἐπαχθῇ σοι δέξαι καὶ ἐν ἀλλάγμασιν ταπεινώσεώς σου μακροθύμησονSir 2:4
Accept whatever is brought upon you, and be patient when you suffer humiliation.
5Sir 2:55ὅτι ἐν πυρὶ δοκιμάζεται χρυσὸς καὶ ἄνθρωποι δεκτοὶ ἐν καμίνῳ ταπεινώσεωςSir 2:5
For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation.
6Sir 2:66πίστευσον αὐτῷ καὶ ἀντιλήμψεταί σου εὔθυνον τὰς ὁδούς σου καὶ ἔλπισον ἐπ’ αὐτόνSir 2:6
Put your trust in him, and he will help you. Make your ways straight, and set your hope on him.
7Sir 2:77οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν κύριον ἀναμείνατε τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ καὶ μὴ ἐκκλίνητε ἵνα μὴ πέσητεSir 2:7
All you who fear the Lord, wait for his mercy. Don’t turn aside, lest you fall.
8Sir 2:88οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον πιστεύσατε αὐτῷ καὶ οὐ μὴ πταίσῃ ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶνSir 2:8
All you who fear the Lord, put your trust in him, and your reward will not fail.
9Sir 2:99οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον ἐλπίσατε εἰς ἀγαθὰ καὶ εἰς εὐφροσύνην αἰῶνος καὶ ἔλεοςSir 2:9
All you who fear the Lord, hope for good things, and for eternal gladness and mercy.
10Sir 2:1010ἐμβλέψατε εἰς ἀρχαίας γενεὰς καὶ ἴδετε τίς ἐνεπίστευσεν κυρίῳ καὶ κατῃσχύνθη ἢ τίς ἐνέμεινεν τῷ φόβῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐγκατελείφθη ἢ τίς ἐπεκαλέσατο αὐτόν καὶ ὑπερεῖδεν αὐτόνSir 2:10
Look at the generations of old, and see: Who ever put his trust in the Lord, and was ashamed? Or who remained in his fear, and was forsaken? Or who called upon him, and he neglected him?
11Sir 2:1111διότι οἰκτίρμων καὶ ἐλεήμων ὁ κύριος καὶ ἀφίησιν ἁμαρτίας καὶ σῴζει ἐν καιρῷ θλίψεωςSir 2:11
For the Lord is full of compassion and mercy. He forgives sins and saves in time of affliction.
12Sir 2:1212οὐαὶ καρδίαις δειλαῖς καὶ χερσὶν παρειμέναις καὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἐπιβαίνοντι ἐπὶ δύο τρίβουςSir 2:12
Woe to fearful hearts, to faint hands, and to the sinner who goes two ways!
13Sir 2:1313οὐαὶ καρδίᾳ παρειμένῃ ὅτι οὐ πιστεύει διὰ τοῦτο οὐ σκεπασθήσεταιSir 2:13
Woe to the faint heart! For it doesn’t believe. Therefore it won’t be defended.
14Sir 2:1414οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς ἀπολωλεκόσιν τὴν ὑπομονήν καὶ τί ποιήσετε ὅταν ἐπισκέπτηται ὁ κύριοςSir 2:14
Woe to you who have lost your patience! And what will you all do when the Lord visits you?
15Sir 2:1515οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον οὐκ ἀπειθήσουσιν ῥημάτων αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ ἀγαπῶντες αὐτὸν συντηρήσουσιν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦSir 2:15
Those who fear the Lord will not disobey his words. Those who love him will keep his ways.
16Sir 2:1616οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον ζητήσουσιν εὐδοκίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ ἀγαπῶντες αὐτὸν ἐμπλησθήσονται τοῦ νόμουSir 2:16
Those who fear the Lord will seek his good pleasure. Those who love him will be filled with the law.
17Sir 2:1717οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον ἑτοιμάσουσιν καρδίας αὐτῶν καὶ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ταπεινώσουσιν τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶνSir 2:17
Those who fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and will humble their souls in his sight.
18Sir 2:1818ἐμπεσούμεθα εἰς χεῖρας κυρίου καὶ οὐκ εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων ὡς γὰρ ἡ μεγαλωσύνη αὐτοῦ οὕτως καὶ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦSir 2:18
We will fall into the hands of the Lord, and not into the hands of men; for as his majesty is, so also is his mercy.
