2Sir 27:22ἀνὰ μέσον ἁρμῶν λίθων παγήσεται πάσσαλος καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον πράσεως καὶ ἀγορασμοῦ συντριβήσεται ἁμαρτίαSir 27:2
As a nail will stick fast between the joinings of stones, so sin will thrust itself in between buying and selling.

3Sir 27:33ἐὰν μὴ ἐν φόβῳ κυρίου κρατήσῃ κατὰ σπουδήν ἐν τάχει καταστραφήσεται αὐτοῦ ὁ οἶκοςSir 27:3
Unless a person holds on diligently to the fear of the Lord, his house will be overthrown quickly.

4Sir 27:44ἐν σείσματι κοσκίνου διαμένει κοπρία οὕτως σκύβαλα ἀνθρώπου ἐν λογισμῷ αὐτοῦSir 27:4

In the shaking of a sieve, the refuse remains, so does the filth of man in his thoughts.In (the) shaking of a sieve, KOPRIA [debris] remains; likewise a man's SKUBALA [claptrap/s**t] in his logic.[a]

5Sir 27:55σκεύη κεραμέως δοκιμάζει κάμινος καὶ πειρασμὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐν διαλογισμῷ αὐτοῦSir 27:5
The furnace tests the potter’s vessels; so the test of a person is in his thoughts.

6Sir 27:66γεώργιον ξύλου ἐκφαίνει ὁ καρπὸς αὐτοῦ οὕτως λόγος ἐνθυμήματος καρδίας ἀνθρώπουSir 27:6
The fruit of a tree discloses its cultivation, so is the utterance of the thought of a person’s heart.

7Sir 27:77πρὸ λογισμοῦ μὴ ἐπαινέσῃς ἄνδρα οὗτος γὰρ πειρασμὸς ἀνθρώπωνSir 27:7
Praise no man before you hear his thoughts, for this is how people are tested.

8Sir 27:88ἐὰν διώκῃς τὸ δίκαιον καταλήμψῃ καὶ ἐνδύσῃ αὐτὸ ὡς ποδήρη δόξηςSir 27:8
If you follow righteousness, you will obtain it, and put it on like a long robe of glory.

9Sir 27:99πετεινὰ πρὸς τὰ ὅμοια αὐτοῖς καταλύσει καὶ ἀλήθεια πρὸς τοὺς ἐργαζομένους αὐτὴν ἐπανήξειSir 27:9
Birds will return to their own kind, so truth will return to those who practice it.

10Sir 27:1010λέων θήραν ἐνεδρεύει οὕτως ἁμαρτία ἐργαζομένους ἄδικαSir 27:10
The lion lies in wait for prey. So does sin for those who do evil.

11Sir 27:1111διήγησις εὐσεβοῦς διὰ παντὸς σοφία ὁ δὲ ἄφρων ὡς σελήνη ἀλλοιοῦταιSir 27:11
The discourse of a godly man is always wise, but the fool changes like the moon.

12Sir 27:1212εἰς μέσον ἀσυνέτων συντήρησον καιρόν εἰς μέσον δὲ διανοουμένων ἐνδελέχιζεSir 27:12
Limit your time among people void of understanding, but persevere among the thoughtful.

13Sir 27:1313διήγησις μωρῶν προσόχθισμα καὶ ὁ γέλως αὐτῶν ἐν σπατάλῃ ἁμαρτίαςSir 27:13
The talk of fools is offensive. Their laughter is wantonly sinful.

14Sir 27:1414λαλιὰ πολυόρκου ἀνορθώσει τρίχας καὶ ἡ μάχη αὐτῶν ἐμφραγμὸς ὠτίωνSir 27:14
Their talk with much swearing makes hair stand upright. Their strife makes others plug their ears.

15Sir 27:1515ἔκχυσις αἵματος μάχη ὑπερηφάνων καὶ ἡ διαλοιδόρησις αὐτῶν ἀκοὴ μοχθηράSir 27:15
The strife of the proud leads to bloodshed. Their abuse of each other is a grievous thing to hear.

16Sir 27:1616ὁ ἀποκαλύπτων μυστήρια ἀπώλεσεν πίστιν καὶ οὐ μὴ εὕρῃ φίλον πρὸς τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦSir 27:16
He who reveals secrets destroys trust, and will not find a close friend.

17Sir 27:1717στέρξον φίλον καὶ πιστώθητι μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐὰν δὲ ἀποκαλύψῃς τὰ μυστήρια αὐτοῦ μὴ καταδιώξῃς ὀπίσω αὐτοῦSir 27:17
Love a friend, and keep faith with him; but if you reveal his secrets, you shall not follow him;

18Sir 27:1818καθὼς γὰρ ἀπώλεσεν ἄνθρωπος τὸν νεκρὸν αὐτοῦ οὕτως ἀπώλεσας τὴν φιλίαν τοῦ πλησίονSir 27:18
for as a man has destroyed his enemy, so you have destroyed the friendship of your neighbor.

19Sir 27:1919καὶ ὡς πετεινὸν ἐκ χειρός σου ἀπέλυσας οὕτως ἀφῆκας τὸν πλησίον καὶ οὐ θηρεύσεις αὐτόνSir 27:19
As a bird which you have released out of your hand, so you have let your neighbor go, and you will not catch him again.

20Sir 27:2020μὴ αὐτὸν διώξῃς ὅτι μακρὰν ἀπέστη καὶ ἐξέφυγεν ὡς δορκὰς ἐκ παγίδοςSir 27:20
Don’t pursue him, for he has gone far away, and has escaped like a gazelle out of the snare.

For a wound may be bound up, and after abuse there may be reconciliation; but he who reveals secrets is without hope.

One who winks the eye contrives evil things; and those who know him will keep their distance.

23Sir 27:2323ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν σου γλυκανεῖ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν λόγων σου ἐκθαυμάσει ὕστερον δὲ διαστρέψει τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου δώσει σκάνδαλονSir 27:23
When you are present, he will speak sweetly, and will admire your words; but afterward he will twist his speech and set a trap in your words.

24Sir 27:2424πολλὰ ἐμίσησα καὶ οὐχ ὡμοίωσα αὐτῷ καὶ ὁ κύριος μισήσει αὐτόνSir 27:24
I have hated many things, but nothing like him. The Lord will hate him.

25Sir 27:2525ὁ βάλλων λίθον εἰς ὕψος ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ βάλλει καὶ πληγὴ δολία διελεῖ τραύματαSir 27:25
One who casts a stone straight up casts it on his own head. A deceitful blow opens wounds.

26Sir 27:2626ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον εἰς αὐτὸν ἐμπεσεῖται καὶ ὁ ἱστῶν παγίδα ἐν αὐτῇ ἁλώσεταιSir 27:26
He who digs a pit will fall into it. He who sets a snare will be caught in it.

27Sir 27:2727ὁ ποιῶν πονηρά εἰς αὐτὸν κυλισθήσεται καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐπιγνῷ πόθεν ἥκει αὐτῷSir 27:27
He who does evil things, they will roll back upon him, and he will not know where they came from.

28Sir 27:2828ἐμπαιγμὸς καὶ ὀνειδισμὸς ὑπερηφάνῳ καὶ ἡ ἐκδίκησις ὡς λέων ἐνεδρεύσει αὐτόνSir 27:28
Mockery and reproach are from the arrogant. Vengeance lies in wait for them like a lion.

29Sir 27:2929παγίδι ἁλώσονται οἱ εὐφραινόμενοι πτώσει εὐσεβῶν καὶ ὀδύνη καταναλώσει αὐτοὺς πρὸ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτῶνSir 27:29
Those who rejoice at the fall of the godly will be caught in a snare. Anguish will consume them before they die.

30Sir 27:3030μῆνις καὶ ὀργή καὶ ταῦτά ἐστιν βδελύγματα καὶ ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλὸς ἐγκρατὴς ἔσται αὐτῶνSir 27:30
Wrath and anger, these also are abominations. A sinner will possess them.
