No evil will happen to him who fears the Lord, but in trials once and again he will deliver him.

2Sir 33:22ἀνὴρ σοφὸς οὐ μισήσει νόμον ὁ δὲ ὑποκρινόμενος ἐν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐν καταιγίδι πλοῖονSir 33:2
A wise man will not hate the law, but he who is a hypocrite about it is like a boat in a storm.

3Sir 33:33ἄνθρωπος συνετὸς ἐμπιστεύσει νόμῳ καὶ ὁ νόμος αὐτῷ πιστὸς ὡς ἐρώτημα δήλωνSir 33:3
A man of understanding will put his trust in the law. And the law is faithful to him, as when one asks a divine oracle.

4Sir 33:44ἑτοίμασον λόγον καὶ οὕτως ἀκουσθήσῃ σύνδησον παιδείαν καὶ ἀποκρίθητιSir 33:4
Prepare your speech, and so you will be heard. Bind up instruction, and make your answer.

5Sir 33:55τροχὸς ἁμάξης σπλάγχνα μωροῦ καὶ ὡς ἄξων στρεφόμενος ὁ διαλογισμὸς αὐτοῦSir 33:5
The heart of a fool is like a cartwheel. His thoughts are like a rolling axle.

6Sir 33:66ἵππος εἰς ὀχείαν ὡς φίλος μωκός ὑποκάτω παντὸς ἐπικαθημένου χρεμετίζειSir 33:6
A stallion horse is like a mocking friend. He neighs under every one who sits upon him.

7Sir 33:77διὰ τί ἡμέρα ἡμέρας ὑπερέχει καὶ πᾶν φῶς ἡμέρας ἐνιαυτοῦ ἀφ’ ἡλίουSir 33:7
Why does one day excel another, when all the light of every day in the year is from the sun?

8Sir 33:88ἐν γνώσει κυρίου διεχωρίσθησαν καὶ ἠλλοίωσεν καιροὺς καὶ ἑορτάςSir 33:8
They were distinguished by the Lord’s knowledge, and he varied seasons and feasts.

9Sir 33:99ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ἀνύψωσεν καὶ ἡγίασεν καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἔθηκεν εἰς ἀριθμὸν ἡμερῶνSir 33:9
Some of them he exalted and hallowed, and some of them he has made ordinary days.

10Sir 33:1010καὶ ἄνθρωποι πάντες ἀπὸ ἐδάφους καὶ ἐκ γῆς ἐκτίσθη ΑδαμSir 33:10
And all men are from the ground. Adam was created from dust.

11Sir 33:1111ἐν πλήθει ἐπιστήμης κύριος διεχώρισεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἠλλοίωσεν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶνSir 33:11
In the abundance of his knowledge the Lord distinguished them, and made their ways different.

12Sir 33:1212ἐξ αὐτῶν εὐλόγησεν καὶ ἀνύψωσεν καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἡγίασεν καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἤγγισεν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν κατηράσατο καὶ ἐταπείνωσεν καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ στάσεως αὐτῶνSir 33:12
Some of them he blessed and exalted, and some of them he made holy and brought near to himself. Some of them he cursed and brought low, and overthrew them from their place.

13Sir 33:1313ὡς πηλὸς κεραμέως ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν εὐδοκίαν αὐτοῦ οὕτως ἄνθρωποι ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιήσαντος αὐτοὺς ἀποδοῦναι αὐτοῖς κατὰ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτοῦSir 33:13
As the clay of the potter in his hand, all his ways are according to his good pleasure, so men are in the hand of him who made them, to render to them according to his judgment.

14Sir 33:1414ἀπέναντι τοῦ κακοῦ τὸ ἀγαθόν καὶ ἀπέναντι τοῦ θανάτου ἡ ζωή οὕτως ἀπέναντι εὐσεβοῦς ἁμαρτωλόςSir 33:14
Good is the opposite of evil, and life is the opposite of death; so* the sinner is the opposite of the godly.

15Sir 33:1515καὶ οὕτως ἔμβλεψον εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ ὑψίστου δύο δύο ἓν κατέναντι τοῦ ἑνόςSir 33:15
Look upon all the works of the Most High like this, they come in pairs, one against another.

16Sir 33:1616κἀγὼ ἔσχατος ἠγρύπνησα ὡς καλαμώμενος ὀπίσω τρυγητῶνSir 33:16
I was the last on watch, like one who gleans after the grape gatherers.

17Sir 33:1717ἐν εὐλογίᾳ κυρίου ἔφθασα καὶ ὡς τρυγῶν ἐπλήρωσα ληνόνSir 33:17
By the Lord’s blessing I arrived before them, and filled my winepress like one who gathers grapes.

18Sir 33:1818κατανοήσατε ὅτι οὐκ ἐμοὶ μόνῳ ἐκοπίασα ἀλλὰ πᾶσιν τοῖς ζητοῦσιν παιδείανSir 33:18
Consider that I labored not for myself alone, but for all those who seek instruction.

19Sir 33:1919ἀκούσατέ μου μεγιστᾶνες λαοῦ καὶ οἱ ἡγούμενοι ἐκκλησίας ἐνωτίσασθεSir 33:19
Hear me, you great men of the people, and listen with your ears, you rulers of the congregation.

20Sir 33:2020υἱῷ καὶ γυναικί ἀδελφῷ καὶ φίλῳ μὴ δῷς ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ σὲ ἐν ζωῇ σου καὶ μὴ δῷς ἑτέρῳ τὰ χρήματά σου ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθεὶς δέῃ περὶ αὐτῶνSir 33:20
To son and wife, to brother and friend, don’t give power over yourself while you live, and don’t give your goods to another, lest you regret it and must ask for them.

21Sir 33:2121ἕως ἔτι ζῇς καὶ πνοὴ ἐν σοί μὴ ἀλλάξῃς σεαυτὸν ἐν πάσῃ σαρκίSir 33:21
While you still live and breath is in you, don’t give yourself over to anybody.

22Sir 33:2222κρεῖσσον γάρ ἐστιν τὰ τέκνα δεηθῆναί σου ἢ σὲ ἐμβλέπειν εἰς χεῖρας υἱῶν σουSir 33:22
For it is better that your children should ask from you than that you should look to the hand of your children.

23Sir 33:2323ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου γίνου ὑπεράγων μὴ δῷς μῶμον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ σουSir 33:23
Excel in all your works. Don’t bring a stain on your honor.

24Sir 33:2424ἐν ἡμέρᾳ συντελείας ἡμερῶν ζωῆς σου καὶ ἐν καιρῷ τελευτῆς διάδος κληρονομίανSir 33:24
In the day that you end the days of your life, in the time of death, distribute your inheritance.

25Sir 33:2525χορτάσματα καὶ ῥάβδος καὶ φορτία ὄνῳ ἄρτος καὶ παιδεία καὶ ἔργον οἰκέτῃSir 33:25
Fodder, a stick, and burdens are for a donkey. Bread, discipline, and work are for a servant.

26Sir 33:2626ἔργασαι ἐν παιδί καὶ εὑρήσεις ἀνάπαυσιν ἄνες χεῖρας αὐτῷ καὶ ζητήσει ἐλευθερίανSir 33:26
Set your slave to work, and you will find rest. Leave his hands idle, and he will seek liberty.

27Sir 33:2727ζυγὸς καὶ ἱμὰς τράχηλον κάμψουσιν καὶ οἰκέτῃ κακούργῳ στρέβλαι καὶ βάσανοιSir 33:27
Yoke and thong will bow the neck. For an evil slave there are racks and tortures.

28Sir 33:2828ἔμβαλε αὐτὸν εἰς ἐργασίαν ἵνα μὴ ἀργῇ πολλὴν γὰρ κακίαν ἐδίδαξεν ἡ ἀργίαSir 33:28
Send him to labor, that he not be idle, for idleness teaches much mischief.

29Sir 33:2929εἰς ἔργα κατάστησον καθὼς πρέπει αὐτῷ κἂν μὴ πειθαρχῇ βάρυνον τὰς πέδας αὐτοῦSir 33:29
Set him to work, as is fit for him. If he doesn’t obey, make his fetters heavy.

Don’t be excessive toward any. Do nothing unjust.

If you have a slave, treat him like yourself, because you have bought him with blood.

If you have a slave, treat him like yourself. For like your own soul, you will need him. If you treat him ill, and he departs and runs away,
