My son, don’t deprive the poor of his living. Don’t make the needy eyes wait long.

2Sir 4:22ψυχὴν πεινῶσαν μὴ λυπήσῃς καὶ μὴ παροργίσῃς ἄνδρα ἐν ἀπορίᾳ αὐτοῦSir 4:2
Don’t make a hungry soul sorrowful, or provoke a man in his distress.

3Sir 4:33καρδίαν παρωργισμένην μὴ προσταράξῃς καὶ μὴ παρελκύσῃς δόσιν προσδεομένουSir 4:3
Don’t add more trouble to a heart that is provoked. Don’t put off giving to him who is in need.

4Sir 4:44ἱκέτην θλιβόμενον μὴ ἀπαναίνου καὶ μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπὸ πτωχοῦSir 4:4
Don’t reject a suppliant in his affliction. Don’t turn your face away from a poor man.

For if he curses you in the bitterness of his soul, he who made him will hear his supplication.

7Sir 4:77προσφιλῆ συναγωγῇ σεαυτὸν ποίει καὶ μεγιστᾶνι ταπείνου τὴν κεφαλήν σουSir 4:7
Endear yourself to the assembly. Bow your head to a great man.

8Sir 4:88κλῖνον πτωχῷ τὸ οὖς σου καὶ ἀποκρίθητι αὐτῷ εἰρηνικὰ ἐν πραΰτητιSir 4:8
Incline your ear to a poor man. Answer him with peaceful words in humility.

9Sir 4:99ἐξελοῦ ἀδικούμενον ἐκ χειρὸς ἀδικοῦντος καὶ μὴ ὀλιγοψυχήσῃς ἐν τῷ κρίνειν σεSir 4:9
Deliver him who is wronged from the hand of him who wrongs him; Don’t be hesitant in giving judgment.

10Sir 4:1010γίνου ὀρφανοῖς ὡς πατὴρ καὶ ἀντὶ ἀνδρὸς τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῶν καὶ ἔσῃ ὡς υἱὸς ὑψίστου καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε μᾶλλον ἢ μήτηρ σουSir 4:10
Be as a father to the fatherless, and like a husband to their mother. So you will be as a son of the Most High, and he will love you more than your mother does.

Wisdom exalts her sons, and takes hold of those who seek her.

12Sir 4:1212ὁ ἀγαπῶν αὐτὴν ἀγαπᾷ ζωήν καὶ οἱ ὀρθρίζοντες πρὸς αὐτὴν ἐμπλησθήσονται εὐφροσύνηςSir 4:12
He who loves her loves life. Those who seek her early will be filled with gladness.

He who listens to her will judge the nations. He who heeds her will dwell securely.

16Sir 4:1616ἐὰν ἐμπιστεύσῃ κατακληρονομήσει αὐτήν καὶ ἐν κατασχέσει ἔσονται αἱ γενεαὶ αὐτοῦSir 4:16
If he trusts her, he will inherit her, and his generations will possess her.

17Sir 4:1717ὅτι διεστραμμένως πορεύσεται μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν πρώτοις φόβον καὶ δειλίαν ἐπάξει ἐπ’ αὐτὸν καὶ βασανίσει αὐτὸν ἐν παιδείᾳ αὐτῆς ἕως οὗ ἐμπιστεύσῃ τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ καὶ πειράσει αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς δικαιώμασιν αὐτῆςSir 4:17
For at the first she will walk with him in crooked ways, and will bring fear and dread upon him, and torment him with her discipline, until she may trust his soul, and try him by her judgments.

18Sir 4:1818καὶ πάλιν ἐπανήξει κατ’ εὐθεῖαν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εὐφρανεῖ αὐτὸν καὶ ἀποκαλύψει αὐτῷ τὰ κρυπτὰ αὐτῆςSir 4:18
Then she will return him again to the straight way, and will gladden him, and reveal to him her secrets.

Don’t refrain from speaking when it is for safety. *Don’t hide your wisdom for the sake of seeming fair.

For wisdom will be known by speech, and instruction by the word of the tongue.

25Sir 4:2525μὴ ἀντίλεγε τῇ ἀληθείᾳ καὶ περὶ τῆς ἀπαιδευσίας σου ἐντράπηθιSir 4:25
Don’t speak against the truth and be shamed for your ignorance.

26Sir 4:2626μὴ αἰσχυνθῇς ὁμολογῆσαι ἐφ’ ἁμαρτίαις σου καὶ μὴ βιάζου ῥοῦν ποταμοῦSir 4:26
Don’t be ashamed to confess your sins. Don’t fight the river’s current.

27Sir 4:2727καὶ μὴ ὑποστρώσῃς ἀνθρώπῳ μωρῷ σεαυτὸν καὶ μὴ λάβῃς πρόσωπον δυνάστουSir 4:27
Don’t lay yourself down for a fool to tread upon. Don’t be partial to one who is mighty.

Don’t be hasty with your tongue, or slack and negligent in your deeds.

Don’t be like a lion in your house, or suspicious of your servants.

31Sir 4:3131μὴ ἔστω ἡ χείρ σου ἐκτεταμένη εἰς τὸ λαβεῖν καὶ ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδόναι συνεσταλμένηSir 4:31
Don’t let your hand be stretched out to receive, and closed when you should repay.
